Sustainability Framework

I believe the best framework discussed in Chapter 3 of Design Is The Problem is the Life Cycle Analysis Framework. I believe this to be the best framework because it is relatively straightforward to apply and effective if implemented properly. Unlike the other frameworks it can be applied to all businesses without major alteration to their practices. The major hurdle with this framework is data collection. But I believe this is a relatively simple problem compared to the problems other frameworks face. Social Return On Investment is one example. SROI would require a proper evaluation of social practices, which is virtually impossible given popular philosophies like moral relativism. Data collection is manageable and becoming an increasingly popular tool for problem solving in today’s world. Another aspect I like about the Life Cycle Analysis Framework is that it empowers consumers with information and allows them to decide the value of sustainability. While this has not been as effective as it needed to be in the past, I believe there is a shift occurring in popular culture towards more sustainable practices. To reach the level of sustainability needed in order to live some semblance of the way we do now, a shift will have to come from our society as a whole. We can’t rely on governments or companies to force sustainability onto us.
